Brief Company History of Uniroyal, Inc.
The Uniroyal Inc. tire company was started in 1892 under the name U.S. Rubber Company in Naugatuck, Connecticut. In 1961 they changed the company name to Uniroyal Inc. Well known for their Tiger Paw tire which was started in the early 1960’s they then went on to create their ‘tiger’ mascot in 1964.
To add some confusion to the mix Uniroyal Inc. is not the same as the Belgian tire manufacturer Uniroyal (which is now a subsidiary company of Continental AG).
The company teamed up with BF Goodrich to create the Uniroyal Goodrich Tire Company in 1986. Michelin Group later acquired this ‘new’ company in 1990.
FUN FACT: Uniroyal has an eight-story high tire in Detroit, Michigan with their name on it. Originally made as a Ferris wheel ride for the 1964 & 65 NY World fair, the wheel could hold 96 people at a time and by the end of the fair it had spun 2 million people around! Now the tire sits next to I-94 by the Uniroyal sales office in Detroit. The tire has had a few face-lifts over the years with millions of dollars being put into it.
